February 21st Prayer Update
“And He was saying to them, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.’”
During this outreach, one of our newest volunteers observed with great surprise how many homeless shared their circumstances which has them on the streets. Oftentimes, it wasn't because of drugs but due to the loss of a paycheck which subsequently caused their inability to meet their expenses. In our conversations, we are often reminded of other challenges faced by these individuals including loss, grief, and pain. Please pray with us for God to keep our hearts soft towards the folks we encounter and that the hope of the gospel can be light in a dark situation. Above all we want to help these people to see there is a solution through our Lord Jesus to provide a way of escape from the bondage of sin.
During our February 21st outreach, our teams distributed:
20 English language Bibles
4 Spanish language Bibles
6 Spanish language New Testaments
6 English language New Testaments
3 Cross-Talking (Addiction) Books
Our team who spent time in Vallejo have been closely following the litigation surrounding a piece of land where a large homeless community are found. They all received eviction notices, and their main concern is where they will go next. Ironically, the homeless camp has grown significantly during this time. Our Vallejo team talked with 20 people during this outreach. We reconnected with Ashley and asked about her mother, Kathy, who has ongoing health problems. Ashley continues to request prayers as her mother's condition worsens.
In North Concord, our team stopped to talk and pray for Kelly, Josh, and Dennis.
Kelly has some work experience in construction. Her prayer request was for the house she was working on to pass inspection so she will get paid. Josh asked prayer that he would make good decisions concerning direction. Dennis is needing prayer for ongoing breathing issues with a possible respiratory infection. We had a profitable gospel-centered conversation with the group and prayed for their requests.
Robert told us he has been homeless since 2012. He was receptive to everything: a Bible, a small New Testament, and an addiction booklet. He appeared to be somewhat mentally impaired. The team prayed for him and clearly presented the gospel. While he was listening and seemingly understood the concept of sin, punishment and forgiveness, nevertheless it was unclear if it all made sense to him. Please pray with us that Robert would wrestle with the gospel truth and that God enables his mind to comprehend the free gift of salvation available to him.
We had the opportunity to connect with Sam, a gentleman with three adult children. Sam told us some of his story, which included lots of grief and loss. Two years ago, his oldest daughter was murdered by her husband. His wife also died during the Covid-19 epidemic. Sam is a welder by trade. Our team prayed that God would provide an opportunity for him to find employment as well as comfort in his grief. We took care to provide Sam with the information about the Bay Area Rescue Mission. We pray that he utilizes their program to get back on his feet.
In the Vallejo encampment, our team had a long conversation with Athena. She spoke of many challenges she faces as a homeless woman, with safety being her top concern. She has been a victim of domestic abuse. Athena also struggles with family issues and is the mother of several children no longer in her care. Our team listened, prayed for her, and gave her a Bible. One pressing challenge is keeping her belongings dry in the rain. One of our team members assisted her with the ability to wash and dry her clothes at the laundromat.
Michael previously worked as a rodeo clown. He was receptive to our team who had a clear and coherent conversation with him. He suffered from a recent injury to his eye that he sustained while climbing on a roof to help someone clear a drain. He fell and poked his eye and is now wearing a patch. When our team asked him how he became homeless, he told us that he simply "fell through the cracks." We pray that as God ordained our conversation and meeting, he would ordain Michael to repentance and faith.
