September 6th Prayer Update

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ Jesus.
— Philipians 4:6-7

During our September 6th outreach, our teams were able to distribute:

  • 12 English Language Bibles

  • 2 Spanish Language Bibles

  • 4 New Testaments

  • 2 'Cross Talking' Books

What sets Hope 680 apart from your typical street evangelism? When you share the gospel on the sidewalk with someone passing by, you have a much lower chance of ever following up with those individuals you've shared with.

With Hope 680, we have the unique opportunity to develop ongoing relationships with those we meet. Although they may move around within our county, God orchestrates opportunities for us to find and follow up, sometimes for years, with people that we've previously talked to. This allows for layers of gospel exposure through conversations, gospel tracts, and Bibles distributed, bolstered with those practical gifts of food, clothing, and other physical help. We have a certainty that regardless of their response, they've been shown the love of God and been reminded that they are seen and remembered by God, all while we plead with them to consider where they will spend eternity. As with street evangelism, we entrust the results to the Lord but desire to always remain faithful to the calling to share the gospel with the lost.

We've had the opportunity to have multiple conversations with Eliseo throughout this year. One of the first times we spoke with him, he was in need of medical attention for his hand after being attacked by a machete. We are thankful for the opportunity to continue to check in on Eliseo, and he shared that his hand is pretty well healed. His primary language is Spanish, but he speaks English fairly well. He was willing to accept a Spanish Bible and promised to read it and share it with others.

Not everyone we approach is friendly and ready for a conversation, but we desire to show love and compassion in return, regardless of their lack of openness. This man didn't want to share his name with us, but he accepted a lunch, a hot coffee, and a blessing bag quickly. Our team discovered that he was in need of a pair of shoes. In the miraculous provision of the Lord, our team had one donated pair to offer him, which happened to be in his size. We don't hand out shoes often, but on this day, it seemed that God desired for us to go above and beyond our regular help to show love to this man. He didn't want prayer or the Bible that was offered to him. But we pray that God will allow us to meet him again and that he would be a little more open when next we meet.

In Vallejo, our team reconnected with Mario.  He has some physical issues with his neck, which seems to be stuck in a tilted position. He remembered our team from previous outreach events. He accepted food and coffee from us. We offered him clothing, but he seems to have a preference to remain shirtless. His girlfriend was in the tent, but she didn't want to come out. She was listening to our conversation with Mario and would participate through the walls of the tent. Last time we talked to Mario, he didn't, or couldn't, make eye contact with us, but he did today. When he was asked, “So, what do you think will happen when you die? Some believe nothing will happen. Do you know what happens?" He said, “Hell if you don’t believe.” It is our prayer that God will place a desire in Mario to turn from sin through repentance and place his trust in Jesus.

Jarett and Lisa were friendly and conversational with our team. Our director, Toby, has known Jarett for almost 14 years. He participated in an RV Bible study with us in the past, and he seems open to another. Lisa was also open to participating. Jarett has spent some time in and out of jail, where the Bay Area Chaplains also ministered to him. He has an upcoming court date that he wanted prayer about. Kelly accepted a Bible and prayer. Our team continues to remind Jarett of the gospel and to carefully consider his eternity. These types of ongoing relationships set our ministry apart from standard street evangelism. We have the unique opportunity for ongoing connection and layers of gospel exposure with folks. We are thankful and pray that God uses that for His glory and to build His kingdom.

Our team was impressed with Mark's ingenuity and skills. He had just finished replacing the power steering pump in his truck when we approached. He shared the difficulty he has in getting a job. When we transitioned to the Bible, he told us that he does not believe in any kind of God. We were able to go through the full gospel presentation with Mark and answer his objections to the Bible and fears that translations have caused accuracy to be lost. When asked, 'Will you repent and believe?' He answered, 'Maybe…'. He started with a lot of objections but relaxed towards the end of the conversation. We were encouraged by his desire to have an open dialogue with us about the Bible. Pray that God uses that conversation to soften his heart.

Not everyone we share the gospel with needs to be homeless. Occasionally, God ordains a few divine appointments with other folks who need to hear the good news of the gospel. This is Mike. He is an older gentleman who has lived in the area for 40 years. He seemed to be rather lonely. He is blind and was happy to have a conversation with us. He declined food or hot coffee. When we started the gospel conversation, he told us that he can't read the Bible but that he listens to church on TV. He couldn't accept a Bible because of his lack of sight. Our team suggested a Bible app for a smartphone or podcasts, but he doesn't have a cell phone. He asked us for a Braille Bible. We were able to purchase an audio Bible, and we look forward to meeting him again so that we can deliver that to him. We pray that we can be an encouragement to Mike.

Please pray these individuals read the Bibles they received.
